The first mosque in Ikorodu built by Balogun Jaiyesinmi

This history of the first mosque in Ikorodu is very interesting. This mosque was built by the powerful Balogun, Balogun Jaiyesimi, who was an Ogun devotee; he was the Balogun of Ikorodu from 1855 to 1901. 

From 1863 to 1865, Balogun Jaiyesinmi led the Wompari war against the Egba during the reign of Oloja Ogunlaru, and the war was victorious. This brought about the popular song in Yorubaland, "DURO DEMI NBO SOKOTO EGBA NSA LO." He was so powerful that he was the first to be accorded the 21-gun salute by the then colonial governor of Lagos State, Gov. Freeman. He was a very wealthy man who controlled over 400 slaves. Balogun Jaiyesinmi got £100, which was the same salary paid to the Akarigbo of Remoland under the 1894 agreement by the British Government. 

He was the first chairman of the Ikorodu local government council established by Gov. Carter of Lagos colony in 1894. He was the man who signed Ikorodu to be part of the Lagos colony; Ikorodu was never part of Lagos until Balogun Jaiyesinmi signed Ikorodu under Governor Carter of Lagos, who was the then colonial governor of Lagos. He was a powerful figure in Ikorodu. 

Interestingly, Balogun Jaiyesinmi, who was an ogun devotee, built the first mosque in Ikorodu because Ifa said one of his children would be an Alfa at birth.
